Description
In their solo show at MK-G, collaborating artists Smith/Stewart (Stephanie Smith b.1968 and Edward Stewart b.1961) presented a body of work revolving around their fundamental concerns: body and space, communication, darkness and the 'in-between'.
In the Long Gallery they presented Ahead (film), 2000. Originally shot on black and white 16mm film & transferred to DVD, it was filmed driving down a remote unlit country road at night. The artists repeatedly turn the car headlights on and off in a consensual pact. Trapped in an endless loop. In Ahead (film), Smith/Stewart explore notions of the void, fear and dislocation; using the car to suggest the themes of sex and death that run through their work.
In the Cube and Middle Galleries Smith/Stewart presented a new sculptural installation as part three of their project, A Black Thread, commissioned by the Film and Video Umbrella and Chisenhale Gallery.
